fwiw, OS X will let you plug in internet of any kind and generate a wifi cloud from it. it can be very very useful.

I unlocked my 3 dongle with software that's available free online. I use an o2 sim which effectively gives me unlimited data for free. Don't use it much as I have an iphone on vodafone now but it's handy to have in the bag for when I'm out and about with my laptop.

I have a couple of dongles from 3's network, both came locked. One of them I've reflashed with new firmware to unlock just for the hell of it, since it was a freebie.

My Vodafone Dell Mini 9 came with software that only worked with Vodafone, although generic software was available from Dell's website.

My ZTE MF627 dongle from 3 is locked to their network. As with mobiles, there's a thriving market in unlocking them.

Mind you, I did win it in a competition from them, so I shouldn't grumble
