Underwhelmed by Pre launch buzz

by Ben Smith on 16th October 2009

It’s now only about 7 hours until the Palm Pre goes on sale in the UK.  We went to the launch party earlier in the week, but since then there’s been little buzz about the device.  Twitter’s been pretty quiet  on the subject, and even the subject of some teasing on the subject

Some Pre demand?

This is what sarcasm looks like kids...

…even the O2 site seems to be intent on underplaying a device that had the network calling itself ‘the home of smartphones’ not so long ago.

I’m sure the site will update in time for shop-opening, but right now on launch-day the Pre is relegated to a small panel, whilst a low-cost pre-pay handset dominates the online store.  Marked with a ‘coming soon’ tag, you wouldn’t even guess the release date was public.  Perhaps O2 is trying to avoid a repeat of iPhone launch days where their systems struggled to keep-up with sales volumes?

For my part, I’ve decided to celebrate ‘Pre launch day UK’ in a slightly unconventional way…

How I'm celebrating Pre launch day...

Come on Ben, the Genio is the pinnacle of mobile technology. What more could you want!

Seriously though, good move! Can I have a fiddle with your N900?

I'm not sure if Jonathan Morris is listening to the same people that were spreading the rumours of the Palm Pre winning Gadget of the Year, but I'll put a bet on there no more than 10 people in that “huge” queue – and 9 of them waiting to buy an iPhone.

I did and Quidco too. In fact I think it was your tweet that alerted me to it. Also used cash-back credit card for even more spendy-WIN.

If I got my maths right I got 15% discount plus 10% cashback from Quidco and 1% from my credit-card… Not cheap, but *cheaper*… 24.5% discount?
