With the first European launch announcement for the Palm Pre on Telefónica’s UK network O2 are they becoming the ‘network for smartphones’? Much of the progress impresses, but I think there’s a few crucial things left to do before O2 (at least) can truly claim that crown.

The thing that lets all of us down is their absolute shit coverage for 3g. And the fact that they CAP their 3g at 384K incoming. Utter Shit. I get loads of speed on orange/tmobile/vodagroan 3g. o2 perhaps is the smartphone network, but the smart phones if they sell well will wind up crippling them as in the case of AT&T; USA. Nice mobiles, shit network, perfect... unlock unlock unlock.. im off to Hong Kong to purchase an unlocked iphone 3gs, then I can choose.

    O2 dont cap at 384k?. I ran a speed test on a E75 today and hit 1mb
  • They did / threatened to (depending on who you believe) some time back. I think they canned that idea :-)

yeah when O2 started 3G on phones they cut the speed for non business customers. That was dropped quite a while back now :)

ok lucky you but on all the mobiles ive tested in edinburgh its always been rate limited
to 384K. i guess its a regional thing for lack of capacity provisioning. cool nice to see o2 doing better. still they are a bit pants at signal.
