Video Diary: Whatley & the Sony Ericsson Satio in Soho

by Ben Smith on 12th October 2009

In the week that the Sony Ericsson Satio became available from Vodafone in the UK, was promised by Orange UK as ‘coming soon’ and was reported as delayed by Carphone Warehouse, James recorded a video-diary in a noisy Soho back-street giving his first - mostly positive - impressions of the device. Utilising the same Symbian S60 5th edition software are the Nokia N97 and 5800XM, the camera, build quality and capacitive touch-screen impress as does the customised interface. Battery-life is noted as a weakness though…

The Satio is typically free on 24-moth contracts from £35 per month or available SIM-free at around £500 (from the end of October).

So which camera is better, your N86 or this thing?

I must admit, that vertical photo gallery is brilliant. Much more intuitive than anything else I’ve seen.

The camera on the Satio beats everything else hands down.

    By miles.

But.. Battery, sharing and just the damn size of the thing put me off.

Do I want to buy this phone to replace my P800? I think I am getting ready to jump and for some reason Whatley’s standoffish review made it seem appealing.

Update: Don’t bother answering - nothing currently out there justifies upgrading my P800. It’s an icon and they are difficult to come by.

Overall reaction on the Satio is somewhat two hearted. At the one side you have this brilliant camera which makes great pictures even under low light conditions at the other hand you have the laggy operating system and a touch screen that doesn’t function in all menus. For me the size wouldn’t be a problem even though it is somewhat thicker than the Iphone it is supposed to battle.
