Video Diary: Vikki Chowney talks E75 and NC10

by Vikki Chowney on 29th April 2009

Vikki introduces herself and takes a first look at the Nokia E75 and the Samsung NC10, which is now available from O2 with a 3G broadband dongle and access to ‘The Cloud‘ WiFi hotspot network. Vikki’s also posted a more in-depth review of the Samsung and there’s more info about her on ‘The Team‘ page.

Good stuff! Any chance of making the text in the videos slightly larger so it’s more legible for those of us watching via mobile YouTube?

  • http://www.pirzadeh.se Nima

Looking forward to see you full review of E75. Keep up the great work.

lol at 3gb “unlimited”, still? really? when’s that going to stop?

  • http://benjam.in Ben Smith

Will do Terrence - thanks for the feedback.

  • http://benjam.in Ben Smith

To be clear: the 3GB is posted as a fixed amount. The ‘unlimited’ is the WiFi access via The Cloud - granted it’s not really unlimited (really, geddit?), but it is ‘fair use’…. proper ‘fair use’ with warnings.

@joshr @bensmith Very specifically placed quotation marks there ;)

Thanks all for great feedback, @Terence, I’ll leave that in Ben’s capable hands

My Bro-in-law has the Samsung NC10 with built in 3G and it’s the dogs…well you know what. Lovely screen, perfect keyboard for large amounts of typing and a battery life that defies physics. The Nokia E75 looks lovely and I really hope it will be a free upgrade for me on ‘Three’ when I renew in November :-)

How much did you pay for your NC-10 if you don’t mind me asking my man?
I’ve been thinking about getting one myself…

    (with VF dongle, like yourself)

I paid £322.99 from Argos as it was the nearest place to have the white one in stock, I also looked at the Dell Mini 10 but it was only 1.33mhz compared to the 1.60 on the NC10, plus i heard great things about the battery life on the Samsung.

The dongle i got separate, its on the new plan, not sure if you have seen it?. I pay £18+VAT a month so about £21 a month and get 5GB of use, but if i go over there is no charge its just slowed down. Available on 30day/12mth/18mth and 24mth. I paid £60 for the black modem and got on a 30 day plan. its listed for ‘small business’ but looks like anyone can have it.

Called the ‘Flat Rate Plan’. Would be perfect for your use!

You should also check out the ASUS 1000HE - supposedly 9.5hrs of battery life (!!) That’ll likely be my next one.

How does it compare to the NC-10 on specs though man?
    The Samsung kicks ass…

The Asus EPC 1000HE has built in bluetooth, and the newer faster N280 Atom cpu. This is likely my next netbook, although I’m waiting for Windows 7.

Do you mean with a dongle?

  • http://www.colinmccarthy.co.uk ColinMcCarthy

It does not need a dongle, it has built in 3G with a slot for the SIM. Think this is the model http://uk.insight.com/apps/productpresentation/index.php?product_id=SAYA06D1B My Bro-in-law paid (well company paid) £360 for it. I’ll try and find out his supplier.

Only thing I don’t like about the NC10 is the normal HD. I don’t want loads of storage as feel Netbooks are for ‘accessing’ things not storing things. Would much perfer a SSD model.

  • jamesbody

    Vikki - a great starter for 10!

Agreed about the form factor of the lovely lovely N75 - the only thing that I do not like about this device is the end user price!

And the NC10 - another super duper device - but totally spoilt by the carbuncle of a USB 3G modem protuding from the side! When will nebook manufacturers learn that BUILT IN 3G modems in netetbooks are not optional, but essential!

I am holding out for a funky new Samsung NC310 - indestructible with a battery that goes on for ever and ever. Amen

  • jamesbody

Oh - and where were the much promised HEELS?

  • http://whatleydude.com James Whatley

Would you mind taking a look at your Brother’s again for us please Colin?
I checked out that link and couldn’t see where the SIM card feature was.

The Dell Netbook - on Vodafone - is the only one that I know of (here in the UK) that has this feature… there’s probably others, but I don’t think the NC10 is on that list.

Happy to be proved wrong mind :)

  • http://benjam.in Ben Smith

I agree about the use / space, but for me SSD is too expensive for netbooks at the moment. The speed isn’t required and the ‘toughness’is debateable as traditonal HD tech is so mature now.

  • http://benjam.in Ben Smith

Calm yourself man! She was wearing shoes all the way through the video.

  • http://benjam.in Ben Smith

re: built in dongles… yes and no. For enterprises, yes - agreed. The costs is minimal and the convenience is significant.

    but…

Netbooks are primarilly a consumer offering sat present so the cost is an issue. Additionally for subscribers (versus PAYG) the convenience of being able to use their subscription allowance on multiple computers (big laptop, netbook, home PC when the broadband is down) is significant.

  • http://www.colinmccarthy.co.uk ColinMcCarthy

James, I checked with my Bro-in-law and the link I posted is the model he has and he got it from Insight. Under the spec’s it says ‘Wireless Broadband (WWAN) HSDPA’ and if I remember correctly the SIM slot is accessed when the battery is removed.

On Friday I will try and see it again and maybe take a pic or do a video :-)

  • jamesbody

Ben - have you not heard of ‘Internet Connection Sharing’?

Place Netbook in optimal reception position, turn on ICS and share the goodness of your 3G connection to all WiFi equipped devices within range or connected by ethernet to the RJ-45 of the netwbook.

In my eyes this configuration is much much more powerful than having nasty Chinese USB dongles floating around the place!

AND - we have done Dan’s boots, so the time is right to do Vikki’s heels (the shoes that is). How about Dan’s boots meet Vikki’s heels (under the steely glare of James’ shades)?

    even carry two….

No - dongles are convenient and form factors will improve.

Nice video. I’m not sure netbooks are for me though. I briefly had a Vodafone Dell Mini 9 but found it lacked the power to make it useful. Not to mention the fact that my fingers covered multiple keys at a time. Vodafone really need to beef up their 3G coverage in Wokingham too. T-Mobile gives me full HSDPA
