Exclusive: James Whatley announces he [CONFIRMATION OR DENIAL] a co-founder of The Really Mobile Project

by Ben Smith on 3rd August 2009

After much speculation across the internet we can [CONFIRM or DENY] James Whatley is a co-founder of recently-launched mobile blog ‘The Really Mobile Project’.

For those wondering if we’ve gone quite mad, the answer’s ‘no’, but the rest of the world has. In the midst of an already-tough few weeks as James has been simultaneously travelling the world blogging whilst really mobile (yes, we are going to keep doing that) and putting himself front and centre in the debate that has erupted following serious accusations by the BBC on privacy and financial issues at SpinVox, where he is Head of Digital and Social Media.

Whilst all this has been going on James has taken a brief leave of absence from The Really Mobile Project. There are a number of factors behind this, not least purely practical constraints - he’s been in places so remote satellite phone has been the only way to reach him - but also so that when he is in the UK he can concentrate on the day job and the rest of the Really Mobile team can take an objective look at the issues behind the SpinVox story.

This evening Techcrunch Europe accidentally published a draft post on James based on an incorrect rumour and then urgently retracted it, offering what we believe to be the first ever apology from the blog. For this, if nothing else, he is our hero.

James will be back soon and in the meantime we’ll be reporting on SpinVox and all things mobile that deserve attention without fear or favour.

As ever, your comments and allegations of bias are welcome below.

I had a quick chat with James via DM on Twitter yesterday, he is under a very heavy schedule and a lot of pressure of late, so this was the last thing he probably needed.
Being a wizened old hack, i have an inbuilt loathing of PR and social media types at the best of times, but i have always found James to be sincere, approachable and dignified, even when i have been at complete loggerheads with him on various issues, he has certainly earned my respect because of that!

I think that’s one of the best photos of James that I’ve seen, captures his thoughtfulness well.

I have finally figured out what the loud cracking noise I keep hearing every couple of minutes is. It’s the sound of many peoples professional respect for James Whatley going through the roof.
From my perspective, Spinvox don’t deserve him. From his perspective, I hope he spends the next month or two firmly putting this shit storm back in it’s box, then gets presented with an outstanding opportunity to work for people who really respect him.
